Then, Phil Ray and Normal Jacobson, in the 1980s, made every effort to commercialize the e-cigarettes idea. This “idea” however, was not electronic, in fact, it was just the mere evaporation of the nicotine. Again, the product was a failure but the term “vape” was coined. 

It was only in 2003 when the e-cigarette was first commercially successful. A pharmacist from China, Hon Lik,  decided to invent the device after his father, who was a heavy smoker, died from lung cancer. Golden Dragon Holdings, the company that Lik worked for, developed the e-cigarette and thus changed the company name to Ruyan, meaning “little smoke”.

But in Australia in January 2009, a law was proclaimed, banning e-cigarettes containing nicotine. Since then, only very limited, maybe even just a handful of stores sell e-cigarettes and e-juices with nicotine.
